A Gripping Story of Survival,
It’s been awhile since I’ve read a memoir as gripping as ‘In the Mirror’. Written in a clear, forthright style, Ann Best’s life story unfolds in a seamless manner, avoiding the mundane and tangents some non-fiction falls prey to. Dealing with not only her husband’s homosexual affairs but also a tragic car accident and her second husband’s alcoholism, one would expect a certain amount of self-pity to be present. But, in fact, it’s nowhere to be seen. Instead, Ann gives us insight into a strong, brave woman who has coped and persevered — and overcome.

|A beautiful and powerful memoir,
As a young bride in 1961, Ann is blissfully married to Larry and looks forward to the comfort of her cloistered religion, the promise of a family and the beginnings of a life as a wife of an up and coming academic. However, after Ann’s life is turned on its head when Larry declares his homosexuality, moves out and lives with his lover, Cliff. Later her daughters, Jen and Megan are involved in a horrific car accident, leaving Jen near death and paralysed.
In less able hands, such a life could easily be turned into something sordid and self-pitying. Not so in Ann’s skilful poetic and powerful prose. She relates the story of her journey from young bride, divorcee and single working mother through to a second tragic marriage and ultimate realisation to look after her, herself, with quiet pared down eloquent language, peppered with natural dialogue and emotional restraint – sometimes too much restraint. When she opens her heart and prose fully – as she does with her passionate but unconsummated love affair with Howard Smith – the writing soars from already great heights to the sublime. For most of the memoir, Ann allows the cathartic events unfolding her life and the people involved to take central stage. Ultimately it is a memoir of how a 4 feet 11 inch “little mom” found the emotional and physical strength of ten giants to tackle and survive many shattered secrets.

|An Unflinching Look in the Mirror,
Ann Carbine Best writes with candor about her life from its rosy marital beginnings. It is a story that is revealed in a straightforward way. It allows us to see how she adapts to shocking revelations and causes the reader to get to know and cherish the Best family. As the wife to an academic and mother of four, she needs additional income and thinks about being a nurse. A pragmatic choice, but after shadowing an assistant in a nursing facility Ann decides this isn’t going to fulfill her creativity. Due to her persistence, she is able to obtain her degree and teach writing, even though she has to move across country to do so.
Throughout the memoir we see that Ms. Best remains true to her Mormon beliefs. We see the positive aspects of her faith and how provisions are made when necessary.
“In the Mirror, A Memoir of Shattered Secrets” is a very touching book and the mirror serves as an analogy of her marriage and her life. The writing is strong; but it seems to get even more powerful near the end. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
